GEEMaP Eligibility and Application Procedure


GEEMaP participants may be either trainees or associates.  Differences in eligibility and funding opportunities are as follows:

For first 2 years of graduate study:  NSF stipend of $30,000/year plus paid tuition and fees
Eligible for departmental,  university, and grant funding thereafter
GEEMaP associates
No citizenship requirements
May apply for departmental, university, and grant funding

Eligibility requirements for all GEEMaP trainees and associates include:

Women and underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

To apply to become either a trainee or an associate, you must complete both steps 1 and 2 below:

1.  Apply for admission directly to the department from which you wish to receive your Ph.D. 

     Be sure to observe all of the individual department's application requirements and deadlines.  Inform the department that you also
     are applying to the GEEMaP IGERT.   

     The seven departments in which GEEMaP participants may enroll are:

     Biostatistics
     Civil and Environmental Engineering
     Computer Science
     Geography
     Geoinformatics (new degree program; not yet open for application)
     Industrial Engineering
     Statistics

2.   Apply for admission to GEEMaP.  Email the completed GEEMaP application form and the additional statement requested on it to Carol
      Ives (geemap@uiowa.edu).  Arrange for three reference letters to be emailed to the same address.

      Applications for GEEMaP traineeships are due either on the home department deadline date or February 1st prior to fall enrollment, whichever occurs first.
      Applications for GEEMaP associate status are due April 15 prior to fall enrollment.

An interdisciplinary committee of participating GEEMaP faculty members makes admission decisions.   Criteria include academic records, reference letters, GRE scores, previous research and community service experience, and match of applicants' goals to those of the GEEMaP program.
